Term Definition
Ohayo Gozaimasu

Ohayo Gozaimasu (おはようございます)

Ohayo Gozaimasu is a standard Japanese polite greeting meaning "Good morning". In traditional Japanese martial arts dojos, including Shotokan karate schools that hold morning classes or early seminars, it is used by students and instructors to respectfully greet one another upon arriving and entering the training hall.

Etymology & Structural Breakdown

  • Origin: The phrase derives from the adjective hayai (早い), which means "early" or "quick."

  • Grammatical Components: Ohayou (おはよう) is the inflected form meaning "early," while gozaimasu (ございます) is the polite, formal auxiliary verb meaning "to be" or "is." Literally translated, the phrase means "It is early [in the day]," functioning as a polite morning salutation.

Key Characteristics & Components

  • Politeness Level: The inclusion of gozaimasu makes it the polite (teineigo) form suitable for addressing teachers (sensei), senior students (sempai), and peers. (In casual settings among close friends, the trailing gozaimasu is often dropped).

  • Vocal Delivery in the Dojo: When spoken within traditional martial arts environments, greetings are delivered with strong, clear projection and an accompanying bow (rei), reflecting alertness and respect.

Budo & Cultural Significance

In traditional budo (martial ways), etiquette (reishiki) is just as important as physical technique. Greeting instructors and training partners with a crisp Ohayo Gozaimasu sets a respectful, focused tone for the session. It signifies leaving the outside world behind, shedding ego, and entering the dojo space with a clear, humble, and ready mind.
